Description

Occasionally you may need to print using only the black ink, the following procedure will show you how for Windows.

Solution

When you print using the grayscale option, the printer will continue to access the color ink tanks. For this reason, you may wish to print using only the black ink tank.

If you use a Mac® refer to use only black ink on a Mac .

NoteNotes

  • If you choose to print in black only, the print quality will be sacrificed.

  • Some color ink will still be used for print head maintenance.

  • Using grayscale alone does not provide this option and the color inks will still be used.

  • All ink tanks need to be properly installed to start any print job regardless of the ink color you choose for that specific job.

Get started

Open the Properties / Preferences window for the printer and follow the steps below for your operating system.

Windows 10 / 11
(for compatible models)
  1. Type Control in the Windows search. (Look for the magnifying glass icon next to Windows icon.)

  2. Select Control Panel.

  3. Select Devices and Printers.

  4. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then select Printing Preferences.

Windows 8 / 8.1
(for compatible models)
  1. On your keyboard, hold the Windows key and press X.

  2. Select Control Panel.

  3. Select View Devices and Printers.

  4. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then selectPrinting Preferences.

Windows 7
  1. Select Start from the bottom left of the Windows screen, then Devices and Printers.

  2. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then selectPrinting Preferences.

Windows Vista
  1. Select Startfrom the bottom left of the Windows screen, then Control Panel > Hardware and Sound >Printers.
    Note If you are in Classic view, select Printers directly from the Control Panel.

  2. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then selectPrinting Preferences.

Windows XP Home Edition
  1. SelectStartfrom the bottom left of the Windows screen, thenControl Panel >Printers and OtherHardware>Printers and Faxes.

  2. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then selectPrinting Preferences.

Windows XP Professional Edition
  1. SelectStartfrom the bottom left of the Windows screen, thenPrinters and Faxes.

  2. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then selectProperties.

Windows 2000/ Me/98
(if applicable)
  1. SelectStartfrom the bottom left of the Windows screen, then Settings, and Printers.

  2. Right-click on the listing for your printer, then selectProperties.

Next, follow these steps:

Adjust the driver setting to print using only the black ink

Note The images below are used as an example. Actual screens may vary depending on the printer model and OS being used.

  1. Select the Main tab.

  2. Select Plain Paper as the Media Type.
    Note If any other paper type is selected, color ink will be used to create black.

  3. Select the box for Grayscale Printing.
